Pike flies
Hello guys looking to tie some pike flies for a trip away in a month or so does anyone have any good patterns or colour combos that's worth a try? Also what would be the best hooks to use and body material? Looking at funky fibre at the minute but would like some opinions first
Thanks
Michael

Re: Pike flies
Make sure you get some surface popping flies. Great at this time of the year

Re: Pike flies
I have tried for them a couple of times.
Once one a friends small lake where he used large streamers in perch, roach and 'Sparkler' style patterns to catch them up to 12lb.
Second time was in Scotland where the jacks up to about 2lb were easily catchable on a Humungous.
Oh, and I caught one of about 3lb at Scaling Dam by accident on a sunk muddler!!!
For your popper heads- best to buy them. I tied some for bass using formed (cut, heated and rolled into shape) ethafoam and found it didn't aerialise on the cast as well as the harder shop bought ones.

Mind...some of the frog popper bugs look great...and crazy at the same time.
Love this though on a fishy tip!

And for surface lures you would cry to see taken:

Re: Pike flies
The Tees seems to have some big pike as reported in the Evening Gazette. Funny the only pike i saw was a dead one layed on the bank at Scaleing Dam. Such a shame to see anglers thinking they have the right to kill these lovely wild animals. That fish must have been 3-4 pound ,and was found by some youngsters on their first fishing trip with their grandad. Wonder if they still remember their first pike like i do.

And incidentally...one thing I found was that the standard shop bought wire traces were awful to cast and created a hinging effect.
'Authantic' wire is fanstastic and knots just like mono!
I found a leader butt of 4-5 ft of 30/40lb stiff nylon with 4-5ft of Authantic turned over quite nicely.
