Re: waters down south
Rutland had to stock with bigger fish years ago because the cormerants were slaughtering smaller stock fish.
Rutland and other southern trout lakes also have warmer water and the fish put weight on.
I fished Rutland in the late 70s and we definatly were not made welcome.
For a start we only had the one fishing rod.
And in the carpark my old Ford Cortina which cost me 50 pound scrap did not seem to fit in with the volvos and rolls royces .
I did though have one of the first carbon fibre rods in my hand .lol

Re: waters down south
We tried to get some information of the baliff at the car park and he walked straight through us and greeted a group of anglers who greeted him and said they were not fishing seriously that day, they were only fishing for a crate of champagne.
Yes they were serious i saw the crate and hampers.
I couldnt give a toss ,all i am saying is that they live in a diffrent world to here in the north.

Re: waters down south
think attitudes have changed a lot over the years peter fly fishing is for all classes now not just the middle classes rutland was swamped with working class lads from all corners of the country when I was there in may I spoke to 4 celebrates. Alan lamb cricketer, bob church angler chris evans (ginger bloke of the telly. and jim tuck world class angler. but I did get pocked with a walking stick by a rich aristocrat looking for his man servant who was meant to be loading his tackle into the boat. he was full of good craic and banter

Re: waters down south
I last visited Rutland in the early 90's in September.
Found a shoal of roach fry tight into the bank and waited....after about two hours it went berserk.
Finished with three overwintered rainbows- smallest 4lb, biggest 6lb and a brown of 4.5lb.
Cracking sport and to be honest the people around me were far from landed gentry- spoke to a couple of mechanics and a lorry driver in the car park.
The baillifs were spot on too- lad with the long hair told us what, where and when- and he was spot on!

Re: waters down south
Some funny people with long hair.
My school teacher always tried to get me to get me hair cut ,annoyed the hell out of him.
I worked for a boss who used to tell me he was going to sack me if i didnt get me hair cut.
I worked for him ten years until i wasa injured in a works accident then he sacked me.
I have long hair and a bloke once asked me how i could afford a Hardy Fishing Ouitfit and a New Gortex fishing coat.
I told him i didnt work and that i bought it all on credit loaned from my brother. He never spoke to me again i dont know why.
That was at Thornton Steward in the 80s.lol

Re: waters down south
I've fished waters from the Highlands to Cornwall, from Dundee to South Wales and everywhere inbetween.
As such I've never been met with snobbery from middle/upper classes- but then again I wouldn't give them chance as fishing is often a great leveller where folk from different backgrounds have a common bond.

Why do we have to have a label put round our neck anyway?
Northumbria Water always annoyed me by chargeing Flyfishermen an extra pound on what they called their fly only fisheries.
I have never learnt the reason why they did because i know that the same fish are stocked in the fly water as are the fly worm water.

Steady on lads..just thought from talk of Rolls Royces, Champagne and Northerners being viewed in a certain light thats what you meant.
Personally I judge people on their own merit- isn't saying "that they live in a diffrent world to here in the north." labelling people though?
I know people in the North East that drive Aston Martins yet made their money from scrap!
Make of that what you will.

Re: waters down south
The Southern people with money are finding that its nice up north. Lots of them are liveing in Wynard estate these days.
I heard them calling the Hamilton Russell at Thorpe Thewles a quite little pub.
I was busting to tell them that it used to be until millions were spent on it makeing it into a restraunt.
Funny isnt it now they are wanting the drinking days back. I cant see that happening can you.

Anyway....back to reality- has anyone ever fished Colliford Lake in Devon?
I last fished there as a youngster but have often fancied revisiting it for its cracking brown trout fishing.

£14 a day for Colliford at the moment- its a lovely wild brown water.
Had a look round Stithians Lake as well which looked nice.
But, if I'm honest- with accomodation in that area being pricey during Summer I would opt for a jaunt to Wales instead where I know from experience the angling community are welcoming and their associations are an example to us all- with most offering river and stillwater fishing at a modest weekly price and advice freely given.

Re: waters down south
I fancied Sea-Trout fishing in Wales but after getting me life ban on the seatroutforum i fear i wouldnt be welcome in the hills.LOL
But i dont bear grudges because ive been campaigning to save Wales from what would be a disaster to migratory fishing if they went ahead with the Severn Barrage.
We have the best Sea-Trout river in Britain here in the North East.
For a £135 pound a Season the Tees and Wear have some big sea-trout and salmon .

Re: waters down south
Lochbois- Most of the main Welsh sea trout rivers don't flow into the Severn Estuary.
Teifi, Dovey, Towy, Mawdach, Wnion....none of those do. Camarthen Bay, Cardigan Bay, Mawdach and Dovey estuaries are nowhere near the Severn.
Severn, Usk, Avon and Wye do- none of those are classic sea trout rivers.
I don't see where a ban from a forum comes into it- the Welsh are warm, welcoming people and encourage visiting anglers.
Dave/Middlemast- Sorry if I've caused you offence mate- wasn't saying you are wrong, just discussing my experiences.

Re: waters down south
I was horrified when i saw a Severn Barrage was in the pipeline.
My main reason for sending a letter to the ministers was because i have seen the affect the Teesbarrage has had on my local river Tees.
In my experiance the Welsh people were not warm welcomeing people, and barring me from a welsh forum is not very encourageing to a visiting angler like myself.
The Severn Barrage would kill millions of endangered fish. It would kill the Severn Bore. And it would kill a lot of the Envoironment around the West coast of Britain. Thats my envoironment head talking.

Have you ever been to Wales fishing?
Did you cancel a visit because of your online tiff (Not that I want to know the ins and outs of it)
You can't base your opinion of a whole country on an internet forum incident.
Seriously- you are doing all the associations down there an injustice by saying such things.

Re: waters down south
To be a bit clearer and not to cause offence- I'll clarify what I mean.
I have fished on Dollgellau Angling Association (Wnion & Mawdach), Llandysul Angling (Teifi), Teifi Trout Association and Pembrokeshire Anglers (Western Cleddau) waters on my visits to Wales.
Each one of those organisations offered advice before visiting and some even had their club committee members show us round- and these clubs offer 7 day weekly permits at superb prices of between £50-90.
As far as I know these people have nothing to do with online forums and rely on their own websites to promote themselves to out of town anglers.
They are clubs who welcome all, encourage children, women and disabled anglers while promoting the sport as a way to increase tourism.
They do good work in making prime fishing available for everyone including buying private beats- and should be commended for doing it.

Thats great news .
With me ive attracted what i now know as Cyber Bullies or Trolls. Its left me feeling very untrusting with who one is talking to on thge internet.
Ive been very nieve,i still am,but i like to think i am honest.
Funny we have one famouse beat on the river Wear where most people say avoid or you will be made unwelcome by the regulars.
Well in 25 years ive never had any trouble on that beat and always enjoyed the crak.
