"TAKES" on flies
while having a coffee yesterday at westhouse the subject of takes came about and what was an anglers favourite type of take ?
most lads opted for a fish taking a dry, closely followed was the sight bob disappearing to Davey jones locker, but mine was when the line just zips away when retrieving nymphs or the couple of gentle knocks then the line locks up,

You can't beat a dry but buzzer takes can be electric.

Re: "TAKES" on flies
I must say up until about two year ago I actually left my lure box in the Garage for about ten years..( and that is no exaggeration )...I used to Witton at least two or three times a week using drys, nymphs and buzzers or the bigger resi's using traditional patterns but after being talked into doing a few competitions I retrieved my lure box from the garage (with a few additions ). I forgot what it was like to strip a lure or worm through the water at pace to have that sudden shocking stop to the line.....it is an addictive feeling, but nothing still beats seeing a CDC being sipped off the surface....

Dry Fly fishing, I love it, seeing the fish fooled into taking something artificial from the surface, I have had a few that have actually come out of the water to take Daddys too:shock:
Re: "TAKES" on flies
Love watching the take on drys...... seeing the fish come up, slurp the fly in then wait a second and booooom...... strike
However, i do love the cat and mouse of retrieving nymphs, feeling the little knocks and taps and trying to work out exactly what to do next to entice the full take.

"The Tug is the Drug " . I agree about the take on a dry fly, really satisfying to cast to a rising fish and see it take your fly, fantastic ! bungs, well they have their place and sometimes it's the difference between catching and blanking, not really for me though ! but to be inching nymphs, buzzers back, and be in direct contact when you feel that nip, tug, or see your line shoot away that sometimes nearly pulls you into the lake lol, that's the thing that brings me back week after week, nothing like it, but try explaining that to your friends who don't fish ! I gave up long ago, it's their loss !

Mine has to be dries on the surface, the anticipation is it going to take or not, but when you get it right it can be magic. Last half hour this time of year when the sun drops and you can see them cruising about, try to work out which direction they are moving, cast infront of it and wait, then ..................it takes, head and tail rise over the top of the fly, great stuff.

When the fly line totally lifts out of the water- taking up the loop and its on!
Usually get that with Summer sea trout on a clearing spate in daytime.
Watching 8lb+ fish wallop a surface lure is up there too- but they don't connect as much.
Bass on popper flies are good as well- that mouth is just cavernous when they take.
