I have heard the River Wear is one of the best places to have a go for Sea Trout, and it has to be the River Tyne for Salmon Wink

Where are you based Terry?
Time on the water and having productive water to fish is paramount in that game.

Chester Le Street club has some very productive water at Cocken Farm that ranges from easy wading and good to learn on through to downright scary (Washing Machine!!).
Surface lures of about two inches long are good and black & silver, black, silver and green tubes have worked down there for me.
My best though (just to throw a spanner in the works) was just under 9lb caught in broad daylight.
Wear seems to fish better from 1am onwards- the dusk fishers get a couple...but in true darkness you get many more takes.

The Free Stretch at Durham is as good as any like. You can fish there during the day and still pick up a good amount of fish also.

I am a member of Bishop Auckland Angling Club and they have water on the Wear and the Tees .
The Wear has to be the best Sea-Trout river in Britain.
I would join a club if you have the money.
I was walking the banks of the Wear the other evening and the height ect was perfect for fly fishing.
I didnt see any signs of fish but you dont have to see them for them to be in the river.
BAAC is £135 for a year and that includes a discount on the Witton Castle Lakes their is about 20 miles on the Wear and a few miles on the Tees.
The Tees is hopefully getting a few more fish past the Teesbarrage.
My best season was 13 sea-trout and i am a person that doesnt try hard or practice a lot of catch and release . I am happy to catch a fish and leave.
